Marriage is the Profound Mystery.  There are many lesser mysteries, of course.

Knowing Jesus Christ, necessarily involves the hidden work of God’s Spirit coming to indwell you, and be a central part of your life (John 3). In teaching the resurrection of Jesus, and his crucifixion, the apostle Paul understood his work as a ‘steward of the mysteries‘ of God (1Corinthians 4:1).

There is the mystery of the kingdom of God (Matthew 13), and there is the mystery of lawlessness [evil sin, iniquity] (2 Thessalonians 2:7), and many other mysteries.

Marriage is The Profound Mystery.  All genuine male-female, one-flesh unions point to it.

The Profound Mystery

In Mark 10:5—9 Jesus taught that marriage has its origins in creation, and it is to be between one man and one woman, in a one-flesh union – to the exclusion of all others, for life (until one partner dies). Paul says of marriage: “This is a profound mystery–but I am applying it to Christ and the church.” (Ephesians 5:32)

It appears that both the Marriage of Christ to the Church, and of a man to a woman, was viewed by the Apostle Paul as ‘The Profound Mystery’.

Yes, it is true that some of the leading people in the Bible embrace their days, and tasks, while engaging in polygamy. That does not validate it, nor does it endorse it.

Marriage is a most wonderful matter. Amidst all our failings in marriage, as a human race, and all of the distortions of the truth concerning marriage, nothing undoes the fact of the beauty of true marriage.
